Donor protection

A few habits to keep your dollars (or euros, or hryvnia) where they belong.

  1. Type the URL yourself. Over 4,200 Ukraine-related domains were registered in the first weeks after February 2022, many designed to mimic legitimate organizations.
  2. Cross-check the watchdogs. Charity Navigator and CharityWatch evaluate financial efficiency. Candid / GuideStar evaluates transparency. All three measure different things.
  3. Skip high-pressure solicitations. Legitimate charities do not require urgency. Ignore unsolicited DMs, texts, and emails.
  4. Cash beats supplies. Avoid bundling clothing or food unless an organization has specifically requested it. Cash respects the strain on logistics chains.
  5. Tax-deductibility: For U.S. donors, deductibility applies only to 501(c)(3) entities or qualifying international affiliates. Direct gifts to the Ukrainian government or to non-U.S.-registered foundations are generally not deductible from U.S. taxes.
  6. Lethal aid: If you specifically want to fund weapons or lethal military equipment, only Come Back Alive (Ukrainian-side fund at savelife.in.ua) and UNITED24's Defense track are authorized to procure these. All other organizations on this list are restricted to humanitarian or non-lethal aid.

Verify any organization on Charity Navigator, CharityWatch, or Candid / GuideStar before giving.
